Your safety and comfort are our top priorities at Sovrle Dental Clinic in North York, ON. Proper preparation is an important step in ensuring your dental procedure is successful and your recovery is as smooth as possible.
Following these pre-operative care instructions carefully will help us provide you with the best possible treatment. Please read them thoroughly before your appointment.
One Week Before Your Surgery
Medication & Medical History Review
Please inform us of all medical conditions and medications you are currently taking, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. If you need a list, you can request one from your local North York pharmacist.
It is crucial that we have a complete picture of your health before any dental procedure. Do not stop taking any prescribed medication without first consulting your doctor.
Blood Thinners
If you are taking blood-thinning medication (such as Aspirin, Plavix®, Warfarin, Eliquis®, or Xarelto®), please let us know immediately. We will coordinate with your family physician to determine if you need to pause or adjust your dosage before the procedure.
The Day Before Your Surgery
Pre-Medication
If you have been prescribed an antibiotic to take before your procedure, please take it exactly as directed. This is often required for patients with specific heart conditions or joint replacements to prevent infection.
Health Changes
If you develop a cold, fever, sore throat, or any other illness, please contact our office as soon as possible. We may need to reschedule your procedure for your safety.
Confirm Your Appointment
We will contact you to confirm your appointment time. Please also confirm your transportation arrangements for getting home after the procedure.
Alcohol and Smoking
Please avoid alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours before your scheduled surgery.
If you smoke, refrain from smoking for at least 12 hours before your procedure, as it can interfere with the anesthetic and healing process. We also have resources to help you quit if you are interested.
The Day of Your Surgery
Fasting Instructions (If Receiving Sedation)
If you are scheduled to receive minimal oral sedation, it is essential that you have an empty stomach. Do not eat or drink anything (including water, coffee, or chewing gum) for at least 2 hours before your appointment. Failure to follow this instruction can lead to cancelation of your sedation.
Note: You may take your regular medications with a small sip of water. Do not skip any of your regular medications.
Transportation is Mandatory
If you are receiving sedation, you must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home. Patients receiving minimal oral sedation will be unable to drive, or operate heavy machinery for up to 6 hours after the procedure.
What to Wear
Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing with short sleeves or sleeves that can be easily rolled up. This allows us to easily place monitoring equipment. Avoid wearing:
Contact lenses (wear glasses instead)
Jewelry, including watches and piercings
Makeup, lipstick, or heavy perfumes
Oral Hygiene
Please brush and floss your teeth thoroughly before you leave for your appointment. A clean mouth reduces the risk of post-operative infection and makes post-operative care easier.
We Are Here To Help
We understand you may have questions leading up to your procedure. Your comfort and health are our primary concerns. If you have any questions or need to clarify any of these instructions, please do not hesitate to contact our office at (416) 491-2117.
