What it's used for
Nitrous oxide is a gas that you breathe in. It helps to lessen pain and makes you feel more relaxed during dental procedures.
What to tell your dentist
Tell your dentist if you have any lung problems, a severe vitamin B12 deficiency, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Also, mention any recent head injuries or eye surgeries.
What is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide, often called "laughing gas," is a safe and effective sedative agent that you breathe in through a small mask. It is used to help you feel more relaxed and to lessen pain during dental procedures.
It is not intended to put you to sleep. You will be awake and able to hear and respond to your dentist throughout the entire procedure.
What to Expect
- During the Procedure: You'll breathe the gas through a comfortable mask placed over your nose. The effects work very quickly, helping you feel calm and at ease.
- After the Procedure: The effects of nitrous oxide wear off very fast. Once the gas is turned off, you will breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes and should feel back to normal within minutes.
- Going Home: While most people feel completely normal, it's always a good idea to have someone drive you home after your appointment, especially if you feel dizzy or lightheaded.
Using nitrous oxide is one of the ways our dental clinic helps ensure our patients have a comfortable and stress-free experience. Ask us if you have any questions about whether it's a good option for you.
