What it's used for
Fluconazole is commonly used to treat moderate to severe or recurring oral thrush.
What to tell your dentist
Tell your dentist if you have severe liver disease or an allergy to fluconazole. Also, inform them about all other medications you are taking, as fluconazole can interact with many drugs, including blood thinners, certain immunosuppressants, benzodiazepines, and some cholesterol-lowering medications.
How to use
Take fluconazole exactly as prescribed and finish the full course of treatment (even if you start feeling better).
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Use your next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up.
It is also recommended to dispose of your toothbrush or other contaminated oral hygiene devices used during the infection period to prevent re-infection.
Side effects
Fluconazole can sometimes cause nausea or diarrhea, or headaches. In rare circumstances, fluconazole can cause heart palpitations, or liver damage.
If you notice heart palpitations, yellowing of the skin, or bruising, please visit the nearest hospital emergency department.
A serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including:
- fever that doesn't go away
- new or worsening lymph node swelling
- rash
- itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
- severe dizziness
- trouble breathing
Storage
