What it's used for
Acyclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by the herpes simplex virus, such as cold sores (orolabial HSV infection).
What to tell your dentist
Before taking Acyclovir, tell your dentist if you are allergic to valacyclovir, if you are taking any medications, or if you have recently received any vaccines.
How to use
Take Acyclovir exactly as prescribed by your dentist. It is most effective when started at the very first sign of a viral infection (such as tingling, itching, or burning).
It can be taken with or without food, but you should drink plenty of water while taking this medication to help protect your kidneys. Finish the full course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Use your next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Side effects
Acyclovir can sometimes cause nausea, diarrhea, or a headache.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including:
fever that doesn't go away
new or worsening lymph node swelling
rash
itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
severe dizziness
trouble breathing
Storage
Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets.
