What it's used for

Tylenol #3 is used to treat moderate pain (such as that after a large dental procedure).

What to tell your dentist

Tell your dentist if you: have liver disease, drink alcohol regularly, or have an allergy to acetaminophen or codeine. This list does not have all the medicines and health problems that interact with Tylenol #3. Tell your dentist about all the prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medicines you take.

How to use

Always take Tylenol #3 as directed by your dentist.

Tylenol #3 contains acetaminophen which appears in many pain relievers, fever reducers, cough and cold medicines, and arthritis treatments. Always read labels before taking other medicines to avoid combining products that contain acetaminophen.

For pain: Follow the label directions for dosage and frequency. Take the medicine as needed and stop once the pain subsides. If your pain persists, ask your dentist about alternative options. Do not take extra doses.

Side effects

For some people, taking Tylenol #3 can cause constipation, drowsiness, or itchiness. To stay safe, take the minimum directed dose during the treatment period.

Some people are allergic to Tylenol #3. A very serious allergic reaction is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including:

  • fever that doesn't go away

  • new or worsening lymph node swelling

  • rash

  • itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)

  • severe dizziness

  • trouble breathing
