What it's used for

Triazolam is used for sedation during dental procedures.

What to tell your dentist

Tell your dentist if you are allergic to benzodiazepines, have a history of alcohol abuse or drug abuse, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you are taking any other medications, especially those that cause drowsiness.

Triazolam is used for minimal sedation, and starts working in about 15-30 minutes and its effects can last up to 6 hours. You will be awake and able to communicate with your dentist during the procedure, but you might not fully remember the entire procedure.

It's very important to have someone drive you to and from your dental appointment if you take this medication for conscious sedation.

What is Triazolam?

Triazolam is an oral medication used for minimal to moderate sedation. It is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines, which are highly effective at reducing anxiety and helping patients relax.

It is a great option for patients with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or those undergoing lengthy procedures.

What to Expect

  1. Before Your Appointment: You will take a small pill as prescribed by your dentist, typically about 30-60 minutes before your procedure.

  2. During Your Appointment: The medication starts working in about 15–30 minutes and its effects can last up to 6 hours. You will feel deeply relaxed and drowsy but will remain awake and able to communicate with your dentist. A common, positive side effect is amnesia, meaning you might not fully remember the entire procedure.

  3. After Your Appointment: You absolutely cannot drive home. It is very important that you have a responsible adult drive you from your dental appointment. You should also have someone stay with you for several hours after the procedure until the effects have fully worn off. Do not operate heavy machinery, drink alcohol, or make any important decisions for the rest of the day.
